The English Premier League put two more clubs through to the quarterfinals of UEFA Champions League, with mid-week action seeing Manchester United and Chelsea qualify for the final eight. They join Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Milan last week, by sending Marseille and Copenhagen home. On this edition of the EPL Talk podcast, myself and my co-hosts - Laurence McKenna and Kartik Krishnaiyer - discuss the typical mix-bag from United and the underwhelming display from Chelsea, considering which of their fellow quarterfinalists United and Chelsea will want to avoid, want to draw. We also consider the potential of Spurs. Now that we've seen the knockout round performances of the eight surviving clubs, how far can Spurs go in their first Champions League? We also discuss Jens Lehmann, Michael Jackson, Alex Ferguson and the Europa League fates of Manchester City and Liverpool before looking toward the weekend slate, 10 matches highlighted by the Citizens' trip to Stamford Bridge. Would Roberto Mancini be better served focusing on Sunday's match? Or does he have the squad to continue competing on three fronts? |

Manchesters City and United are slated to meet in the FA Cup semifinals after weekend victories over Reading and Arsenal, with the Royals putting up the better fight. The Gunners were unable to get past a patchwork United side, leaving them with one win in their last 11 meetings with teh Red Devils. They bow out at the quarterfinals as to West Ham United and Birmingham City, with Stoke City and Bolton set to meet in the other semifinal. On this edition of the EPL Talk podcast. myself, Kartik Krishnaiyer and Laurence McKenna discuss the weekend's action, to the extent we were able to do so without driving off course. And when we did deviate, Liverpool's ability to recruit reinforcements without European football was on our minds, as was the concept of good investment versus bad investment in football.

There were two English Premier League matches mid-week, but our main focus of attention was Champions League, where one North London club qualified for the quarterfinals while their rivals were sent home empty handed, jaw slacken. For the second year in a row, Arsenal's Champions League met its end in Barcelona, but whereas it was Lionel Messi that eliminated him last year, many Gooners will content this year's elimination falls at the feet of the official. On this edition of the EPL Talk podcast, myself, Kartik Krishnaiyer and Laurence McKenna talk about the controversial manner by which Arsenal was escorted out of Champions League. We also talk about Spurs' 1-0 (aggregate) win over Milan and the mid-week matches before shifting our focus to this weekend's FA Cup quarterfinals. |

Liverpool has snapped a three derby losing streak to Manchester United, with strong performances from Dirk Kuyt, Luis Suárez and Raúl Meireles leading the Reds to a 3-1 victory over their rivals. On this edition of the EPL Talk Podcast, myself, Kartik Krishnaiyer and Laurence McKenna talk about the Red Devils disappointing performance, what it means for the title race, and what the derby victory tells us about the state of Liverpool football. We also talk about the rest of the weekend results, a difficult weekend for the league's officials, the increasingly tight relegation battle, as well as mid-week action, where we have two Premier League fixtures along with the second leg of Champions League Round of 16 action - Arsenal at Barcelona, and Spurs home to Milan. That along with your feedback and questions on this, the weekend review edition of the EPL Talk podcast. |
